BODHRANS- The Bodhran is an Irish frame drum ranging in size from 10" to 26" with 14" - 18" being
the most popular. A goatskin head is normal tacked to one side of the frame. The back is open
allowing the player to put their hand against the head to adjust pressure and tone. Some professional
model drums have tuning systems allowing the player to tune the drum, basic models do not.
History- There is evidence that during the Irish Rebellion of 1603, the Bodhran was used by Irish
forces as a battle drum, or that the drum provided a cadence for the pipers and warriors to keep to as
well as to announce the arrival of the army. Bodhran means "skin tray". Although most common in
Ireland, the Bodhran has gained popularity throughout the Celtic music world, especially in Scotland,
Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. We import drums from Ireland by Walton.
